The Centre’s research activities are meant to improve the knowledge of human locomotor system’s structure and functioning.

🎉 Exciting news: The next Bohnes Colloquium will b 🎉 Exciting news: The next Bohnes Colloquium will be held by LBMC in Lyon, France on 26 and 27th January 2026, bringing a great opportunity for scientific exchange within our community.

LBMC update:
From October 27 to 29, several researchers and PhD candidates from LBMC took part in the 50th Congress of the Société de Biomécanique.
This event was an opportunity to exchange with many colleagues from France and abroad about the latest advances in biomechanics ✨.

17/10/2025: Bohnes members from University of Sas 17/10/2025:  Bohnes members from University of Sassari attended the 2025 Aerospace Festival in Olbia (Sardinia, Italy) 🌌
From July 6 to 9, several members of the Laborator From July 6 to 9, several members of the Laboratory of Biomechanics and Impact Mechanics (LBMC, Univ Lyon1 - Univ Eiffel) were in Zurich for the 30th Congress of the European Society of Biomechanics.
Feng Hu presented his PhD work entitled “Comparison of in-vivo measured lumbar spine loads in different sitting positions and those estimated by a musculoskeletal model”, and Aurélie Levillain presented her study entitled “Evaluation of an in vivo phantomless calibration method in CT-based finite element models: metastasised femurs”.

This congress also marked the end of David Mitton’s term as President of the ESB, and he was warmly thanked for his two years leading the society (and eight years as a member of the board).

We had the amazing opportunity to present our research a the GNB conference (16-18.06.25) in Palermo 🇮🇹, diving into the latest advancements in biomedical engineering. 
Then, we flew north to Copenhagen 🇩🇰 for EMBC 2025 (14-17.07.25), where we joined the global community to discuss how technology is shaping the future of biomedical engineering. 

We are very grateful for the change to represent our lab, learn from inspiring researchers and contribute to the international conversation on biomedical science!

Last but not least this week: we were at ECSS Rimi Last but not least this week: we were at ECSS Rimini 2025 – the 30th Annual Congress of the European College of Sport Science! 

One of our PhD students from the University of Rome Foro Italico presented her work on HDsEMG-force coherence 💪, skills she developed during her time abroad at the University of Birmingham under the guidance of Professor Deborah Falla .

It was great to share ideas, discover inspiring research, and meet so many amazing people! 🙌

Presentation of the work “SISTINE 3.0: Plantar Pre Presentation of the work “SISTINE 3.0: Plantar Pressure Assessment in Chronic Venous Disease During Figure-of-8 Test” at the 8th IEEE MetroInd4.0&IoT Conference, held in Castelldefels (Barcelona) 🇪🇸.

The event aims to explore the role of metrology in enabling the Fourth Industrial Revolution—a fundamental transformation in the way we live, work, and relate to one another—driven by advances in sensors, data analysis, and measurement systems.

This study is the result of a collaboration between University of Rome “Foro Italico”, Sapienza University of Rome, and Technoscience – Parco Scientifico e Tecnologico Pontino, a hub that promotes research and the development of new technologies by connecting academia, companies, and professionals in a dynamic and collaborative environment.

The work was presented within Session 7.1 – Wearables for Physiological and Human Activities Monitoring: Sensors, Algorithms and Applications, focusing on innovative approaches to health monitoring.

A valuable occasion to exchange knowledge and perspectives on how Industry 4.0 and IoT are shaping new measurement methods and instrumentation.

On March 13, the kick-off meeting of the HBM4SEAT On March 13, the kick-off meeting of the HBM4SEAT (“Human Body Modelling for Seat”) project was held at the Laboratory of Biomechanics and Impact Mechanics (LBMC) in Lyon.
Supported by the ANR (French National Research Agency) and four renowned industrial partners—Safran Seats, Forvia, Alstom, and Altair—HBM4SEAT aims to advance knowledge and develop human body models to enhance the evaluation of transport seat comfort.
This initiative brings together several LBMC researchers, experts in finite element modeling, musculoskeletal modeling, and biomechanical analysis of posture and movement.
🔬 A major scientific breakthrough to redefine seat comfort and optimize the user experience!

It has been an incredible experience for our research fellow Beatrice De Lazzari from the University of Rome Foro Italico to join this event, dive into the world of #OpenCap and #OpenSim, and connect with an inspiring global community! 🌍✨

During the workshop, our researcher explored how to leverage OpenCap data from vertical drop jumps to develop a deep learning classifier for assessing ACL injury risk. Exciting steps toward automation in biomechanics! 🔬🤖

They talked about Markerless MoCap 📷, multibody simulation 🤸‍♂️, biomechanical characterisation in clinics 🧡👧 and in nurseries 🤱, human-bike interaction 🚴‍♂️, and into the estimation of inertial parameters from 3D scans of children 👨‍💻. What an amazing experience !

❗️At SIAMOC 2024 in Stresa, we presented one of our research topic focused on unlocking the complexities of neuromuscular control in diabetic subjects, both with and without neuropathy.

❗️Next, we took part in the Dynamics of Human Balance School at the International Centre for Mechanical Sciences (CISM) in Udine, where we attended seminars led by world-renowned experts. These sessions covered groundbreaking research on posturography and the human balance control 🧍🏻‍♂️🧍🏻‍♀️📖

We’re excited to bring this wealth of knowledge back to our labs and apply it to meaningful, impactful research.

It was a fantastic opportunity for them to share their work, engage with leading experts, and receive valuable feedback from the scientific community. 

The experience was made even more memorable with a private tour of the Capitoline Museums and a wonderful social dinner, where they connected with fellow researchers in a beautiful, relaxed setting. Moments like these remind us how important it is to both celebrate hard work and build meaningful relationships. 🫶🏼

We are thrilled to share that the LBMC co-organised with RoBioSS (from l'Institut Pprime in Poitiers, France) the "Markerless Challenge".
The objective was to compare different approaches to quantify kinematics using video data. Classic movements were evaluated (e.g., walking), but that wasn't all! Can you guess the posture 😉 ?

Stepping Out of the Lab! ➡️ 🚶🏻‍♀️‍➡️ Joint angle Stepping Out of the Lab! ➡️

🚶🏻‍♀️‍➡️ Joint angle estimation, particularly during gait, plays a significant role in clinical settings. Up until now, the gold standard has been #stereophotogrammetry, which provides accurate joint angle estimates by defining anatomical reference systems. However, recent advances in #inertial measurement technology allow these sensors to be used for human movement analysis, including #joint angle estimation.
👨🏻‍⚕️ For clinical applications, though, the differential orientation between two adjacent anatomical segments needs to be described using interpretable angles.

📊 This is one of the research topics at the Movement Analysis Laboratory in Ancona, Italy, where a new method for sensor-to-segment alignment is being developed to achieve clinically interpretable angles.

Juniors and Seniors from the Laboratory of Bioengineering and Neuromechanics of Movement presented their research at ISEK in Nagoya, Japan, MeMeA in Eindhoven, Netherlands, and ECSS in Glasgow, Scotland.

Topics included:
🔹 Low-cost wearable sensors for motor telerehabilitation
🔹 Neuromuscular electrical stimulation combined with voluntary contractions
🔹 Effects of fatigue on lumbar Erector Spinae muscle activity in older vs. young adults

They also had the chance to reconnect with colleagues and friends from other universities who are part of the Bohnes family. 🫶🏼

🤱🏽 📸 Biomechanics during childcare !  We are happ 🤱🏽 📸 Biomechanics during childcare ! 

We are happy to share that the laboratory of Biomechanics and Impact Mechanics from Lyon 1 participated in an in-situ experimental campaign in a nursery last month. The objective of this project is to characterize postures and manual handling activities performed by childcare workers in the workplace from vidéo data only. 

This study is followed by a PhD student who aims to understand the situations and mechanisms that affect the musculoskeletal system contributing to the drop of musculoskeletal disorders in this work sector.

At the Movement Analysis Laboratory in Ancona (UnivPM), we’re pushing the boundaries of rehabilitation and human-machine interfaces. 

Our team is hard at work collecting data using both traditional marker-based kinematic models and advanced wearable IMUs (Inertial Measurement Units).

Why is this important?
While markers offer robust joint angle measurements in structured environments, IMUs bring unparalleled flexibility, enabling accurate tracking in real-world settings without the need for a lab.

Greetings from Biolab3! The esperimental campaign Greetings from Biolab3!

The esperimental campaign for the HybrID project has just kicked off! We are marking the start of a thrilling quest to develop an EMG dataset for reaching tasks. The final objective is the development of an EMG-based intention detection module to be integrated in the control of a robotic arm exoskeletons for the rehabilitation of the arm. The module will harness EMG data to detect user intentions, empowering the control module to assist in achieving precise positions.
